NORTH BERWICK — The Thornton Academy boys and girls took home first place in the York County Championship track and field meet on Saturday afternoon at Noble High School.

The TA boys won with a score of 131, while Biddeford finished second with 113. Marshwood was third with 107 points, while Sanford and Bonny Eagle tied for fourth with 72. Host Noble was sixth and Massabesic finished seventh.

The TA girls collected 154 points on the afternoon with Noble finishing second with 115 and Bonny Eagle third with 96.5. Massabesic was fourth, while Sanford finished fifth and Marshwood and Biddeford came home in sixth and seventh.

TA girls coach Lisa Huntress was excited about her team’s performance.

“The beginning of the season was a little challenging with the poor weather, but when you compete in these late events great things happen, it was crazy today,” said Huntress.

Part of TA’s success comes from its focus on the larger events.

“We always step up, the way we coach and prepare, we are always working for the larger events. I believe in that theory and that stepping stone. We go into each meet wanting to accomplish something and we do then move to the next one. Our teams have that big meet mentality,” said Huntress.

The Trojans will look to continue to improve as they prepare for Southwesterns and the state meet.

“Improvements … I want them to improve and finish as high up as we can at the state meet. I want them to be able to look back and be proud of everything that they have done,” said Huntress.

Sanford’s Peter Hegarty also made history, breaking the York County meet and Sanford school record for pole vault with a vault of 14-6.

Hegarty was proud to accomplish goals he set early in his career.

“It’s really special, especially in my senior year. To break those records … it’s just really special to accomplish those things I dreamed of since (I was) a freshman,” said Hegarty.

Hegarty felt extra motivated considering the increase in talent at the big meet.

“I like it more, you have pressure from other vaulters that make you want to do more. There’s a lot more competition that makes you want to work harder so I like that aspect of it,” said Hegarty.

TA’ Alex Arnold won the 100 dash, while Biddeford’s Jordan Cook took home first in the 3,200 run.

Longhao Chen finished first in the long jump for TA, while Arnold won the triple jump.

Biddeford’s Matt Brady impressed, earning first in both the shot put and discuss, while Sanford’s Logan Edgecomb finished first in the race walk.

TA also took home the 400 relay, with Sanford finishing second.

Emily Wasina won the 3,200 run for Massabesic, while TA’s Olivia Libby won the 300 hurdles.

Massabesic’s Moriah Beiner later won the girls high jump, while TA’s Alex Hart won the long jump.

TA’s Sam Curran won the shot put and the discus, while teammate Kaila Swan took home first in the triple jump.

Biddeford’s relay team of Leia Dorais, Madison Perry, Lani Melton, and Phoiphailin Young finished first in the 3,200 relay.

There were plenty of locals finishing second on the day as well, starting with TA’s Daniel Marsh in the 100 dash and teammate Keegan Fowler in the 200.

Marsh later took home second in the 400, while Biddeford’s Dwayne Dyer placed second in the 1,600 run.

Biddeford’s Scott Spellman finished second in the 300 hurdles, while TA’s Travis Snyder finished behind Hegarty in the pole vault.

Arnold also took home second in the long jump, while Biddeford’s Jackson Oloya was second in the triple jump.

TA’s Jason Montano finished behind Brady in the shot put, while Cody Saucier finished second in the discus for Biddeford. Biddeford’s Lucas Rhoy also finished second in the javelin.

Biddeford’s relay team of Cook, Oloya, Dyer and Trevor Jordan took home second in the 3,200 relay.

Hart would take home second in the 200 and 400 for TA.

Biddeford’s Abby Laverriere placed second in the 3,200 run as Massabesic’s Syiera New was second in the 300 hurdles.

TA’ Maria Seneres was second in the pole vault, while teammate Noelle Boudreau was second in the triple jump.

Isabella Capozzi placed second in the shot put for TA, while Abigail Cook took home second in the discus for TA.

Sanford’s Ciara Negron finished second in the javelin and Massabesic’s Autumn Nostrom finished second in the race walk.

TA’s team of Allie Gross, Abigail Leblanc, Heila Gonzalez and Libby was second in the 1,600 relay, while Sanford’s team of Summer Camire, Phoenix Demers, Rebecca Campbell and Lauren Fink were second in the 3,200 relay.
