BIDDEFORD — Joseph G. Doherty, 88, of Biddeford, died Saturday, April 16, at St. Andre’s Health Care in Biddeford.

He was born March 19, 1928, in Biddeford, the son on Joseph James and Annette (Martin) Doherty. He was educated locally, and was a 1948 graduate of St. Louis High School.

Joseph had been employed with the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea CO. (A&P) for 43 years until his retirement.

On May 4, 1968, he married A. Louise Chenard at St. Mary’s Church in Biddeford.

He was a member of the Biddeford & Saco Elks Lodge, the St. Louis Alumni Association, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Biddeford Historical Society. He will be remembered for Fourth of July parades and Christmas parties; he loved working in his garden and building unique bird houses.

Joseph was preceded in death by: his parents, Joseph J. and Annette Doherty; a sister, Pauline Gascon; and a brother, Richard Doherty.

He is survived by: his wife of 48 years, A. Louise Doherty of Biddeford; a brother, Raymond Doherty and his wife Lori of Lyman; two nieces, Maureen Gaudette and her husband Matt, and Celeste Zukowski and her husband Steve; and three nephews, Douglas Doherty and his wife Cheri, Michael Doherty, and Christopher Gascon and his wife Kathy.

Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
