On Nov. 27, 1917, Pearl Fuller Spencer was born in Great Works, Old Town, the second child of Clement W. and Ella Mae (Fuller) Spencer.
Pearl graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1935. She went to the Trull Hospital School of Nursing in Biddeford. On May 2, 1941, she received her RN license.
Pearl remembered President Roosevelt’s voice on the radio saying, “Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan; we are at war.” At that moment, Pearl decided to join the Army as a nurse. She was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant Nursing Supervisor stationed at Camp Edwards in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
On Feb. 20, 1943, Pearl was married to her husband, Lawrence, at Great Works Baptist Church in Old Town by Rev. Oscar E. Thomas.
Pearl was a member of Saco Grange for 72 years, holding offices in the local and state granges. She enjoyed traveling around the state with Lawrence to visit other granges, meeting and making new friends.
She was a woman of great faith. She was a member of United Baptist Church for 70 years, where she served on many boards and committees through the years. With her husband, she enjoyed many summers at their camps at Hills Beach, Ossipee Lake and Moosehead Lake until his passing in 2004.
Pearl enjoyed bridge with the “Thursday Bridge Club,” square dancing, parades, church and holidays with the family. She loved meeting people, getting to know them and making many new friends throughout her 98 years. She considered the staff at Wardwell her second family, and was always interested in their families and how they were doing.
She was the “queen” of the family, loved by all, and will have a place in their hearts forever.
She was preceded in death by: her husband of 61 years, Lawrence E. Grant Sr.; her sisters Thelma d’Auteuil and Fern Spencer; and her brother, Beverly “Bucky” Spencer.
She is survived by: daughters Ella Mae Blackmore and her husband Robert of Saco, and Margaret Grant of Saco; step-son Lawrence E. Grant Jr. and his wife Beth of Bondville, Vermont; grandchildren Calvin Storey of Florida, Brenda Robbins and her husband Brian of Saco, Rebecca Blackmore of Memphis, Tennessee, Laura Blackmore Howes and her husband Bernie of Ashland, and Mark Blackmore of Saco; and great grandchildren Grant Gaulin and Benjamin Howes.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, in the vestry at United Baptist Church, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary.
