BIDDEFORD — Sister Anita Therrien, 92, formerly known as Sister S. Paulinedu Redempteur, died at St. Joseph Convent on April 10, 2016.

Sister Anita was born on Feb. 6, 1924, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the eldest of three daughters born to Adelard and Albea (Letarte) Therrien. She attended St. John Baptist School in Methuen, Massachusetts, and St. Anne High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

In 1944. she entered the Congregation of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec) in Biddeford. After her basic religious training, she spent a year at the Good Shepherd Scholasticate in Quebec City.

She later earned her bachelor’s degree in education from St. Joseph College in Portland, and her master’s degree in secondary school administration from Niagara University in New York. She also took courses from Northeastern University in Boston and Notre Dame University in Indiana.

Sister Anita was both an elementary and secondary school teacher. She taught in Biddeford, Old Town and Van Buren as well as in Lawrence. She ably served in many leadership positions.

She was principal of St. Joseph Elementary School in Biddeford, provincial superior of St. Joseph Province for six years, and director of Bay View Villa. In 2004, when her health began to fail, she retired and was transferred to Good Shepherd Pavilion at St. Joseph Convent.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Mahoney from Haverhill, Massachusetts, and several nephews.

Visiting hours are from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at St. Joseph Convent, 409 Pool St., Biddeford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at St. Joseph Convent. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.
