DOVER, NH — The Biddeford boys hockey team cruised to a 10-3 win over host Marshwood/Traip/Sanford on Thursday night at the Dover Ice Arena.
The Tigers wasted little time, quickly jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and peppering the Nighthawks’ goal.
Colin Petit kicked things off with a goal just 35 seconds into play, while Nick McSorely and Colby Plante added two more later in the period. The Tigers also had two shots ring off the crossbar and missed a breakaway opportunity in that span.
“We really focused on starting fast and getting after it. It relieves the pressure a little bit and the guys play a little bit more relaxed,” said Biddeford coach Jason Tremblay after the win.
Colin Petit would score his second of the game less than a minute into the second period, and the Tigers would go on to score three more goals. McSorely scored twice to secure the hat trick, while Curtis Petit added a shorthanded goal.
Curtis Petit scored just 22 seconds into the third, giving the Tigers a goal in the first minute of all three periods.
“We talked about starting (each period) fast, every period we tell them to put teams on their heels, and I thought we did that tonight. We really extended the zone on them tonight and that’s what the guys have been working on in practice all week … executing the things they know,” said Tremblay.
Logan Magnant would add a score late in the third period, followed by another by Plante to secure the 10-3 decision.
Marshwood/Traip/Sanford scored twice in the second period. Henry Honkonen would net a goal on a 5-on-3 powerplay, while Chase Gagnon scored late. DJ Cagnina scored in the final two minutes of regulation for the Nighthawks’ third goal.
Although the Tigers dominated throughout much of the contest, they hope to sharpen their defensive performance moving forward.
“We need to take care of things in the D zone, I thought we had a few breakdowns in the D zone. We bailed ourselves out a few times, but we need to focus on that at practice, and work on our defensive zone coverage,” said Tremblay.
Biddeford, led by 11 seniors, had four goals from freshmen in Thursday’s win. Tremblay was excited to see his younger players contributing early in the year.
“It’s been great. We have some really good freshmen, and those guys are really stepping up. The older guys have also led them and taught them how to get out there. The kids are 14-year-olds facing 18-year-olds, I’m really proud … it gives you a different dynamic,” said Tremblay. “The three freshmen that are playing are hockey guys.”
Biddeford improves to 2-0 on the year, and will hit the road to face St. Dominic’s on Saturday night.
