YORK — The York girls basketball team dominated the visiting Biddeford Tigers 69-8 on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats controlled the game on both sides of the ball throughout the entire match, applying relentless pressure on both offense and defense.

York senior Chloe Smedley led the Wildcats in scoring with 16 points, while Madigan Cogger scored 14 and Lily Posternak contributed 10.

Biddeford’s Erin Martin scored six of the team’s eight points on the evening.

From the get go, the Wildcats asserted themselves all over the court.

York jumped out to a fast 8-1 lead and only continued to improve from there.

After a flurry of consecutive shots made, along with six steals, the Wildcats pushed ahead 22-1 heading into the second quarter.

York carried the momentum into the second, as the Wildcats outscored the Tigers 20-2 in the frame.

By the end of the first half, York already had seven different players score a basket.

Perhaps York’s most impressive quarter was the third when they kept Biddeford from scoring a single point.

York was clicking in all phases of the game and strung together multiple key plays in the third quarter to essentially put the game away.

About three minutes into the quarter, York’s Smedley stole the ball at midcourt and took it all the way for an easy break away layup.

Later, Shannon Todd ran the ball down the left side of the court and delivered a clean pass through traffic to Smedley who made another easy layup.

Both teams were using primarily bench players in the fourth.

As the minutes waned, the tempo slowed down and the Tigers remained composed in the final eight minutes.

Biddeford’s only two points not from free throws came at the buzzer when Taylor Wildes banked the ball off the backboard for the score.

Biddeford coach Liz Bell had a great deal of respect for the experience of York’s team heading into the game.

“Bottom line is that we knew we were coming in here facing an experienced team. They are very talented, they play hard and are very poised,” said Bell.

Another issue that the Tigers have faced this season is injuries, with two key players out.

“It didn’t help that we have been playing shorthanded,” said Bell. “We have had injuries and we are still very young. (York) played great and threw pretty much every defense at us.”

On the bright side for Biddeford, many of the subs got to play for extended periods of time, which is not anything new, according to Bell.

“Since we have been shorthanded all year we have been having to give our subs a lot of minutes. I think that this will be good for them to have had the chance to play such a talented team like York,” said Bell.

Despite the loss, Bell believed that there was some value in this game, especially from a learning standpoint.

“I told the girls that this is a great learning experience. We had to make a lot of adjustments on the fly, I think that this will be good experience for us moving forward,” said Bell.
