The York Golf & Tennis Club was the setting for the 27th Annual Frank E. Hancock Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit York Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 27. A combination of the perfect autumn day, amazing York River views, and a desire to support The Miracles Campaign for Obstetrics and Pediatrics at York Hospital inspired over 150 golfers and guests to come together raising $44,200 during the event.

“Yes, the perfect storm … without the storm,” said York Hospital Lead of Development Carol Kane. “We couldn’t have scripted a better scenario, nor better players! We’re so appreciative of our sponsors, golfers and our volunteers who continue to join us and give back year after year.”

This tourney’s proceeds will help to fund the upcoming renovation of The Birthing & Family Center, with the groundbreaking scheduled for Oct. 29. Four labor, delivery and recovery rooms, two private newborn nursery rooms, a new family waiting area along with a dedicated pediatric room with 24/7 telemedicine connection to Massachusetts General Hospital are to receive the timely updates.

This tournament is played every year in honor of Frank Ellis Hancock, who was instrumental in the growth and prosperity of both York Hospital and the York Golf and Tennis Club. He passed away in 1988, leaving a legacy of community service. His strong leadership and fundraising efforts resulted in a number of important hospital expansions between the years 1958-1978. His wife, Kathleen “Kay” Hancock, who has not missed a tournament in its 27-year history, was accompanied by her daughter Carolie of Topsham, and niece Lisa Hancock of Ogunquit.

Following tournament tradition, players and guests savored a delicious seasonal dinner catered by York Hospital’s dining and nutrition staff, after which the raffle and generous silent auction winners were applauded, followed by the tournament winners.

Tournament champions Dick Carmichael, Jon Carmichael, Steve Dunne and Andy LeConte were cheered as they accepted honors and awards for having the low score of 61. Closest to the Pin honors went to Bob Ramsay for the men, while Longest Drive honors went to Cheryl Strong and Andy LeConte.
