BIDDEFORD — Dean Roy Smail, 47, passed away at Maine Medical Center on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, surrounded by his family, from heart-related issues.
Dean was born Jan. 11, 1968, the youngest of nine children to Donald and Dolores Smail of Lyman, where the children grew up.
Dean is survived by eight siblings: Debbie Seavey and Denise Finn, both of Arundel, Dana Smail and his wife Joy of Wells, David Smail and his wife Elizabeth of Vallejo California, Doreen Casey and her husband Charles of Buxton, Duane Smail and his wife Danna of Lyman, Dorothy Smail and her husband Tim O’Wrill of Saco, and Dorinda Smail and her partner Peter Bergeron of Lyman; many nieces and nephews; and his very best pal, his dog Lilly.
Dean served in the U.S. Army where he learned to operate heavy equipment. He was an expert crane operator and was very proud of those skills and his time serving his country.
Dean spent a lot of time at his sister Dorinda’s business, The Uptown Hound in Lyman. He loved being with his family and all the dogs. All of the nieces and nephews loved it when Uncle Dean came to visit. He will be sadly missed by many.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
