SANFORD — Sanford voters who want to educate themselves about candidates in the running for the Nov. 3 election have an opportunity to do so at a Candidates Forum set for 6-8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Sanford City Hall.

The event is sponsored by the Sanford Strong Coalition and will feature eight candidates for three City Council seats, the three candidates for Maine House District 19 and the sole candidate for Sanford School Committee, Jonathan Mapes, who is unopposed in his bid for reelection.

Candidates looking to fill the vacancy left by the death of Democratic Rep. William Noon in House District 19 are Democrat Jean Noon, Republican Matthew Harrington and Victor DiGregorio, who is unenrolled. Both Noon and Harrington have qualified as Maine Clean Elections Act candidates for public funding, while DiGregorio’s Clean Elections status was pending, as of this morning.

Maine Ethics Commission Candidates Registrar Emma Burke said deadlines for MCEA certification materials was Monday, Sept. 28.

“Victor DiGregorio has been granted an extension until this Friday to resolve some issues he had with his qualifying materials,” Burke wrote in an email. “By the Commission’s rules, candidates who are seeking MCEA certification may request extensions to resolve certain types of issues.” She did not specify the nature of the issues.

Burke said DiGregorio turned in all of the materials not subject to an extension as required by the 5 p.m. Monday deadline.

William Noon was reelected to his seat in the November 2014 election and died in July of cancer. The winner of the threeway District 19 race will fill the remainder of his term, which expires when a new Legislature is sworn in following next year’s November election.

In the running for a oneyear Sanford City Council term are incumbent Alan Walsh and former state legislator John Tuttle.

Battling it out for two three-year City Council terms are incumbents Fred Smith and Richard Wilkins, along with candidates Dianne Connolly, Donald Jamison, Leonard L. Kinney and Lucas Lanigan. Sanford candidates run at-large, and so for the two three-year terms, the two highest votegetters from the slate of six candidates will be elected. Winners in the municipal races take office Jan 1.
