WATERBORO — It seems like forever ago since the Massabesic field hockey team last played a game without recording a victory. So it was fitting that Monday’s marquee matchup against Cheverus lasted seemingly forever, as the Mustangs needed almost all of a second overtime to pull out a 3-2 victory.

After losing its first two games of the season Massabesic (8-2) has now won eight straight. The latest victory looked probable early in the game when the Mustangs took a quick 2-0 lead. Kaylee St. Laurent scored on a put-back just over 10 minutes in and Maggie Redman scored from Emma Rutledge a minute later.

Cheverus (8-2), which began the season 8-0, cut the deficit in half on a Colleen Slattery goal from Rebecca Archer 10 minutes before halftime. Hannah Abbott scored off an assist from Abby Ford with just under 13 minutes remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

The teams played a scoreless first extra period and got below the two-minute mark in the second before Redman returned Rutledge’s favor by assisting on Rutledge’s game-winning goal with 1:50 left in double overtime.

Kelley Wescott stopped 11 shots in goal to earn the win for Massabesic. Cheverus’ Kate Kane took the hard-luck loss after making 25 saves.
