LISBON — Lisbon is continuing its push to improve its look and attract new business.

The town is holding a public hearing Tuesday to get input on a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant the town received to help fund improvements in the Route 196 and Lisbon village area. The grant must be used as part of a strategy that targets downtown service and business districts, making them more appealing for future investment.

Lisbon officials learned in June they could receive the funding, which will be used for sidewalk and landscape improvements.

Economic and Community Development Director Tracey Steuber said at the time the town had six months to explore what kind of work could be done and at what cost. Tuesday’s public hearing with the town council is a part of that process. Aside from the needed sidewalk upgrades, the money can be used to improve lighting, landscaping and drainage.

The town council already approved pedestrians safety and traffic improvement projects at the village end of town in September. The project adds new LED lights to poles for pedestrian traffic at the intersection of Village Street and Route 196.

Funding for the estimated $10,749 improvement comes from Lisbon’s downtown tax increment financing reserves. The fix is in response to complaints about the older pedestrian lights not properly syncing up with traffic lights in the area.

The town used money from another CDBG grant for sidewalks in Lisbon Falls in the Union Street area. Tuesday’s town council meeting begins at 7 p.m.
