BOSTON — Led by senior Mike Martin, the No. 14 nationally-ranked Bates men’s cross country team placed seventh among 41 teams overall, and second among 13 Division III squads, at the all-divisions Open New England Championships Saturday at Franklin Park.
Among Division III teams, the Bobcats trailed only Middlebury (second place).
Bates had representation from all four classes among its top seven runners in the men’s varsity race. Martin led the Bobcats for the fifth time in as many races this season, finishing an impressive eighth overall and first among Division III competitors. Martin covered the 8- kilometer course in 24:42, a pace of 4:57 per mile, 10 seconds ahead of the next D-III runner, Nate Sans of Middlebury.
Taylor Saucier of Freeport, a Bates sophomore, finished in 26:59, good for 59th place overall.
Bates travels to Colby College this upcoming next Saturday for the Maine State Championships, with the starting gun scheduled for 11 a.m.
