BRUNSWICK
Brunswick firefighters early Friday morning to rescued two people stranded in the water after their canoes capsized in the New Meadows River.
The incident was reported at the end of Johnson Way, located of Woodward Point Road, just before 2 a.m.
Brunswick fire Capt. Derek Klemanski said police, fire and rescue crews responded to a report of four people in the water after the two canoes they were fishing from capsized. He estimated they were a couple hundred yards from shore.
Two men and two women were in the water. Klemanski said it appears one was able to swim to shore and another was rescued by a bystander in a sea kayak. Brunswick police used a row boat on shore to get to the other two, who held onto the boat until firefighters arrived.
The fire department launched the rescue boat at the New Meadows River boat launched and made their way to the boaters, who were wearing life jackets. From there, rescuers brought the boaters to shore where EMTs evaluated them. No one was taken to the hospital.
The department used a new jet-powered aluminum boat during the rescue.
