BRUNSWICK — In a classic it’s-never-over-until-it’s-over battle, Brunswick High School piled up over 500 offensive yards and got past Cony 54-38 in Class B football action on Friday.
Before a packed crowd, the Dragons, who lost to Cony in the Eastern Maine Class A playoffs last fall, led 32-12 at the half only to see the Rams, behind quarterback Ben Lucas (35 completions, over 400 yards), claw back in the second half.
A late Cony TD pulled the visitors to within 46-38, but Ryan Macijewski made a standout defensive play on the 2-point conversion and Brunswick answered with a 1- yard Alex Bandouveres score and his follow-up conversion run to pad the lead.
“They can score in bunches,” said Brunswick coach Dan Cooper. “It was an unbelievable game and probably the biggest game played there in a long time.”
Lucas McCue ran 23 times for 163 yards and Bandouveres 20 times for 154 yards and five TDs with Will Bessey (seven for 90 yards) and Logan Tupper (eight carries, 54 yards) also filling in. Quarterback Brady Larson was 4- of-6 for 90 yards.
McCue opened with 39-yard run, but Cony answered with a Lucas scoring strike for a 6- 6 game.
“We never punted in the first half, although we did fumble,” said Cooper, whose 3-0 Dragons host Skowhegan on Friday.
Brunswick had marched to the C-10 and fumbled, but three plays later Cody Bucheit recovered a fumble on the C-34. McCue scored from 16 yards to make it 12-6.
In the second quarter, Bandouveres scored from 2 yards out and added a 12-yard TD run with a Larson-to-Bucheit conversion pass making it 26- 6.
With a minute left, Brunswick marched 70 yards with Bessey scoring from 13 yards out for a 32-12 halftime lead.
Cony scored first in the third quarter and Bandouveres answered with a 16-yard run to make it 38-18.
After another Cony score, Brunswick had to punt, but made the defensive stops and Bandouveres scored from 2 yards out for a 46-25 advantage.
Cony climbed to within 46- 38 before the Dragons put the visitors away for good.
Jacob Duffy was a defensive standout with 15 tackles.
“It was just a great atmosphere and a lot of offense,” said Cooper.
