TOPSHAM — Mt. Ararat High School football snapped a 29-game losing streak on Friday and gave head coach Frank True his first varsity win with a 42-26 Class B verdict over Fryeburg Academy.
The last time Mt. Ararat won was 2009 when the Eagles dispatched Edward Little 20-6 in the next-to-last game of the season.
Mt. Ararat endured three straight winless campaigns before beating Fryeburg to improve to 1-2.
Mt. Ararat is scheduled to visit 0-3 Gorham on Friday.
Mt. Ararat got on the board first with a 23-yard Jordan Castonguay scamper. After Fryeburg tied the game up at 6-6, Devin Monteiro took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the score.
With the score tied at 12-12, Monteiro added a 23-yard scoring run on a reverse play as Mt. Ararat went up 18-12.
Later, Dylan Johnson and Alex LaFountain hooked up on a 20-yard TD strike and Bru Abreu added the 2-point conversion for a 26-20 advantage.
Abreu also scored from 4 yards out and Monteiro’s conversion run made it 34-20.
The Eagles’ lead got up to 42-20 on a 2-yard Abreu run.
Castonguay finished with 144 yards on 18 carries, while Abreu had 127 on 22 lugs.
Montiero, Nick Graney and LaFountain each caught a pass as Johnson was 3-of-4 for 37 yards.
Defensively, Graney had 12 tackles, Montiero eight, Castonguay seven, Caleb Hall and Connor Reed six each, and Jack Mickles, Mike Tran and Colin Hovey four each.
