AUGUSTA (AP) — Former Maine Senate President Kevin Raye has filed his paperwork for his bid to fill the 2nd Congressional District seat.
Raye, a Republican, said in a release on Thursday that it’s crucial that the party nominate a candidate who will appeal broadly to Maine residents and has the “ability to hit the ground running” for the state.
Raye and his wife, Karen, own Raye’s Mustard Mill in Easport. He lost two previous bids for the seat to Rep. Mike Michaud, who’s leaving Congress to run for governor.
Raye will be challenged by Republican former state treasurer Bruce Poliquin and former Navy officer Blaine Richardson of Belfast.
Democratic Sen. Emily Cain of Orono, Sen. Troy Jackson of Allagash and Alden Smith of Sangerville are also seeking to fill Michaud’s seat.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
