Several local students were named as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists this week:

Kyle A. Hietala from Morse High School in Bath;

Madeline Cowan, Kathryn A. Eldridge, Tessa J. Hauptman, Walter Martin, Zachary I. Miller and Joseph Waring, from Brunswick High School; and

Emma A. Cota, Ellison S. Etnier and Jonah S. Levy from Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham.

There are among 16,000 semifinalists who will have the chance to compete for 8,000 scholarships worth about $35 million in total.

Students compete for the scholarship by scoring highly on the Preliminary SAT in their junior year. Each semifinalist will submit a detailed scholarship application, which will include more information about the student, including academic record, student activities, and more. The student must be endorsed by a high school official and write an essay.

About 90 percent of semifinalists will advance to finalist positions, and about half of those will receive a Merit Scholarship.
