AUGUSTA (AP) — The Department of Health and Human Services is touting a new survey that gives high marks to Maine’s Riverview Psychiatric Center, which has lost its federal certification.
DHHS spokesman David Sorensen said the report from the Joint Commission, a leading national health care accreditation group, shows the Augusta facility is “on point” for key metrics including use of restraints, seclusion and anti-psychotic drugs that have been a lightning rod for critics.
He said the only thing that’s holding it back from regaining federal certification is the need for a residential facility for patients from the criminal justice system who don’t need hospital-level care.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
