BOWDOINHAM — State police say the woman who was thrown from her vehicle as it rolled along Interstate 295 a week ago, has died in the Lewiston hospital where she was taken by ambulance after the crash.

The driver, Mona Kelley, 56, of Steep Falls, died at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, said Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland this morning.

“Troopers said her car overturned along the southbound lane last Tuesday afternoon, after several motorists reported the car was being operated erratically,” McCausland said. “Kelley was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car after it overturned several times in the median. Troopers suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash.”

The rollover crash was reported to Bowdoinham Fire and EMS at around 6 p.m. on Aug. 6, on I-295 southbound near mile marker 42.

Trooper Seth Allen said that night standing several feet from the overturned, crumpled vehicle that state police had a report of an erratic vehicle which he was trying to catch up to, and “while I was en route, we had a report that the vehicle had rolled over.” The vehicle reportedly struck a guardrail in Gardiner and continued driving.

When Allen arrived there were two emergency room doctors on scene. He told The Times Record then that “it does appear alcohol was a factor.”

Topsham Rescue transported Kelley, who sustained multiple injuries, to Central Maine Medical Center where she was a hospital spokesperson said she was in critical condition the following day.

Bowdoinham Fire Chief Arthur Frizzle was on scene last week responding to the crash as well and said that a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter was not available to transport, but said a LifeFlight ground crew intercepted the ambulance and rode with Kelley to CMMC.
