PORTLAND (AP) — A program that provides transportation for Maine’s developmentally disabled and poor to doctor’s appointments, therapy and other non-emergency situations has been plagued with problems since new federal rules took effect.

The program is run by MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program.

Clients have complained of rides showing up late or not at all, and of drivers getting lost.

Jennifer Ruel of Old Orchard Beach tells The Portland Press Herald her 3-yearold son was two hours late getting home one day when a driver got lost.

Stefanie Nadeau, director of MaineCare services, acknowledged that a switch to new contractors at the start of this month has led to glitches, but they are being addressed.

One of the new contractors says it has handled more than 99.7 percent of scheduled trips without complaint.
