Debevoise tennis tourney this weekend

SOUTH PORTLAND — The 35th annual Pete Debevoise Memorial Tennis Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at the South Portland High School tennis courts.

Honoring the legendary coach at South Portland, named National Interscholastic Coach-of-the-Year in 1976, the Debevoise is a fundraiser for the scholarship fund established in his honor.

Competition will be held in men’s open singles and doubles, women’s open singles, and in open mixed doubles. The event is sanctioned as an outdoor major tournament by the Maine Tennis Association.

Brunswick Soccer Camp has openings

BRUNSWICK — Brunswick Parks and Recreation and Seacoast United once again team up beginning Monday for the August annual soccer camp, held at Edwards Field from 9 a.m. until noon.

The week-long camp features an international coaching staff, including player/coaches from the Czech Republic, Paraguay, England and local head coach Sam Chard from Mt. Ararat High School. Jimmy Hopkins, former head coach at Dean College and now Seacoast Technical Director, and Seacoast Senior Director and Brunswick Junior High School coach Jim Wade are on the staff.

Each day will feature technical ball work, small-sided games and a camp-wide fun game.

Players do not have to be exclusively from Brunswick in order to attend.

Changes to August Junior Golf Camp

BRUNSWICK — Kevin Joseph has announced that the Summer Junior Golf Camp slated for August will be held Monday to Wednesday at Mere Creek Golf Course.

The first two days are full days, with the third and final session a half day.

The mission for the Junior Golf Camp is to provide a fun, positive environment so the young golfers have a place to learn and improve their skills, through instruction, practice and a variety of health conscious games and activities. Joseph is committed to growing junior golf in the Brunswick area by bringing excitement to the kids and their overall enjoyment of the game.

The cost is $150 and is for golfers ranging in age from 8-16. Students need to arrive each day by 9:30 a.m., with the first two days finishing by 4 p.m.

Players are asked to bring their own clubs, though there are clubs available if notice is given in advance.

Students will be given instruction, play a series of golf-related games, team competitions and exercises. There will be a strong focus on the fundamentals and knowledge of the game. Camp emphasis will center around putting, chipping, pitching, bunker and full swing, along with posture, grip, swing and alignment. Also, general knowledge of the rules, etiquette, golf course and history of the game will be included in the lesson plans.

Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Also, weekly junior clinics are available on Tuesdays and Fridays at 4 p.m. The clinics run for an hour-anda half and cost $15.

Fight Hard 5K slated for Sunday

BRUNSWICK — The fourth annual Fight Hard 5K will take place at Edwards Field on Sunday.

Race time is 7:45 a.m., with registration between 6:45 and 7:30 a.m. Race-day registration is $20, and preregistration and donations can be made online at www.runinarace.com/Fight- Hard5k/index.html.

The first 300 to register receive a race shirt.

The Fight Hard 5K is a race/walk in loving memory of Laurie Cockburn Butler, organized by the Cockburn/ Butler family. Fight Hard 5K is a non-profit charitable organization with all net proceeds to benefit the Dean Snell Cancer Foundation (deansnell.org).

The mission of the Dean Snell Cancer Foundation is to provide financial assistance to cancer patients at the New England Cancer Specialists facility in Brunswick.

Over the first three years, the race has raised over $30,000.
