WEST BATH
Workers from the state Department of Environmental Protection will attempt today to mitigate up to 125 gallons of home heating oil that spilled from an overturned tank Wednesday night.
Fire Chief Greg Payson said this morning that 100 to 125 gallons of home heating oil flowed onto the ground after the tank fell and ruptured at 45 Higgins Road. The tank fell off a wooden platform that had deteriorated, Payson said.
DEP workers are excavating the contaminated soil and removing it from the site, the chief said.
“Rain today would be a concern,” Payson said. “”We mitigated it as much as we could, called DEP and they’re evaluating the situation.
Payson said the spill did not occur near a water source.
The West Bath Fire Department responded to the call at 8:13 p.m. Wednesday.
“We cleaned as much of it up as we could with pads, but most of it was soaked in by the time we got there,” Payson said.
