A celebration, hosted by their children, was held on June 30 at Cook’s Lobster House on Bailey Island. Those in attendance included friends and relatives of the couple.
Marthe, who was a bookkeeper at Downeast Pharmacy, is now retired, as is Richard. He was a U.S. Postal Service clerk.
Their children are Richard Dowling II of Midlothian, Va.; Daniel Dowling of Brunswick; Diane Dowling Comeau of Brunswick; Timothy Dowling of Huntsville, Ala.; and Matthew Dowling of Douglas, Mass.
The couple have eight grandchildren.
The former Marthe Schinck of Brunswick married Richard Dowling of Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 11, 1953, at St. John the Baptist Church in Brunswick. The best man was the groom’s brother, the late Alfred Dowling, and the maid of honor was Pauline Schinck, the bride’s sister. The groom was then serving in the U.S. Navy.
The Dowlings have resided in Brunswick for all but two years of their married life.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
