YARMOUTH — Joan M. DeWachter, age 90, passed away peacefully at her home at Bay Square at Yarmouth on July 14, 2015. She was born on July 24, 1924, in South Bend, IN, daughter of Albert Leo Zeitler and Eleanor Tyler.

She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Alphonse DeWachter, who passed on Dec. 8, 1999, as well as a brother, John Zeitler, sisters Nancy Beeman and Peggy Kline.

Mother of three, she leaves behind daughter Linda Brown and son-in-law James Brown, son James DeWachter and daughter-inlaw Mary Willson and son Robert DeWachter.

Joan was very active in Scouting for over 20 years from being a Cub Scout den mother to the director of a National Girl Scout event. She enjoyed the fellowship it created.

She went on to create Oak Hill Candles, selling her famed hand-dipped bayberry candles around the world.

Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Bay Square at Yarmouth who lovely cared for Joan for the past three years.

She will be deeply missed by family, friends, and the many people that knew her. Her memory will live on in all of us.

There will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Iris Network, Portland, Maine.
