PORTLAND (AP) — Portland’s superintendent is leaving the city’s financially troubled school system for Kentucky after three years in the district.
The Portland Press Herald reports 43-year-old Emmanuel Caulk is leaving Portland Public Schools to lead 40,000 students in Lexington’s public school system.
The Fayette County Board of Education voted to hire Caulk Saturday and will begin working by Aug. 12.
Caulk was hired in July 2012 to be Portland’s school superintendent and his contract was renewed in December to run thorough 2019.
Portland School Board Chairwoman Sarah Thompson says the board will meet Tuesday to discuss his replacement. She indicated the board could appoint an interim superintendent for up to a year.
This will be the district’s third superintendent search in nine years.
He did not return calls for comment Sunday.
