TOPSHAM — Kevin Carter struck out 13 as Highland Green opened its American Legion Zone II baseball season with a 4-3 victory over Brunswick on Saturday at Mt. Ararat High School.

Brunswick bounced back in the second game of the doubleheader with an 11-0 Mercy Rule win in six innings.

Carter walked two and permitted seven hits in the opener. He also doubled and singled as Highland Green managed three hits against Brunswick starting pitcher John Parker, who struck out 12 and permitted two walks. Zach Small also singled for Highland Green.

For Brunswick (1-1), Charlie Lowell had three hits, including a double, while Parker and Josh Goddard each doubled.

In the nightcap, Zach Meggison handcuffed Highland Green, pitching a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Parker and Joey Doherty each single three times in the win, with Lowell adding a single and a double.

Jacob O’Neill had the lone hit for Highland Green (1-1), which is slated to visit Smith-Tobey Post 21 at Kelley Field in Bath today at 5:30 p.m.

Brunswick is slated to visit Gardiner today at 5:30 p.m.

Smith-Tobey

Smith-Tobey dropped a pair to Pastime Club at Lewiston High School, falling 7-0 in the first game and 6-5 in the second in Zone II action.

Former Lisbon High School standout Kyle Bourget allowed one hit over five innings of work for the opening game win. Carter Chabot had a two-run single in the third inning, while Mike Wong singled three times.

Jacob Cressey took the loss for Smith- Tobey.

In the nightcap, Brady Cusson’s RBI single scored Hunter Landry as Pastime Club (2-0) walked off for the sweep.

Wong and Bourget doubled in the win.

Grant Hefler, Darren Wood and Conlon Ranta each singled twice for Smith-Tobey (0- 2).
