Police are investigating separate armed robberies that took place Tuesday night at the Topsham Fair Mall and Wednesday night at Amato’s in Brunswick.
The Topsham robbery was reported at Sun Tan City at 8:32 p.m. Topsham police say a man displayed what is believed to have been a semiautomatic handgun and demanded money. He then fled the area with an undetermined amount of cash.
Police searched the area with a police dog but couldn’t locate the man. The suspect is described as a white male between 6-feet and 6-2 tall, wearing a long dark hooded jacket with his face covered.
In a similar incident Wednesday night, Brunswick police got a report of an armed robbery at Amato’s, located at 148 Pleasant St., at approximately 9:45 p.m.
According to police, a man went to the sales counter, showed a semiautomatic handgun and demanded money from the cash drawer. He pulled out a shopping bag, tapped the gun on the counter and held the clerk at gunpoint while she filled the bag with cash from the register. He then fled the store on foot, heading west on Pleasant Street.
Police searched the area and tried to track the suspect with a dog but were unable to locate him. The suspect is described as a white man between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was wearing dark colored gray or black jeans, sneakers with white soles, a black hooded sweatshirt, and a black or dark gray zippered windbreaker. His face was partially covered with a scarf and he was wearing some sort of black disposable examination gloves.
Topsham Police Lt. Fred Dunn said Wednesday that police didn’t know if their suspect was the only person involved. There were only two employees in the store at the time and they didn’t see which way the suspect went after he left Sun Tan City.
Dunn said police are also working with the FBI to see if the robbery is linked to the recent string of robberies in southern Maine that began March 20.
