The state will unveil “Operation Dry Water” on Maine’s lakes, rivers, streams and coastal waters in an effort to stop drunken boaters.

Three state agencies will be focusing on educating boaters of the risks they take if they operate a boat or other watercraft while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In Maine, it is illegal to operate a boat with an alcohol level of .08 or more.

Last year, Operation Dry Water resulted in 4,519 citations and 337 arrests nationwide. Maine had one fatality blamed on drunken boating last year, police said.
