A fire that damaged the playground near the former Longfellow School on Longfellow Avenue Friday morning remains under investigation.
The Brunswick Fire Department was called to the Longfellow Community Playground shortly after 5 a.m., said Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Emerson. He estimated a 10-foot-by-10-foot area was burned. The fire was quickly extinguished as suppression efforts weren’t difficult. Emerson said Friday afternoon the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
The property is owned by Bowdoin College but the town has a lease with the college that allows it to operate the playground and make it available to the public.
Tom Farrell, director of the town’s parks and recreation department, said a contractor was on site Friday assessing needed repairs and that the department is awaiting some pricing. It does intend to make repairs.
Farrell said there was a post that was burned that is structural in nature, so although the damage was localized, this post supports the portion of the playground that is cordoned off.
