BRUNSWICK — Pejepscot Historical Society will present a talk by Richard Lowry, associate professor of English at the College of William and Mary, titled “Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Gardner, and Gettysburg: A President and a Photographer Come to Terms with War.”
The program is 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at Curtis Memorial Library’s Morrell Meeting Room. Admission is $3.
Lowry will focus on how Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner — whose portraits of Lincoln are familiar to many — documented the aftermath of Civil War battles such as that at Gettysburg, and the impact of the war on President Lincoln.
Guests are cautioned the presentation includes images of deceased soldiers shown where they fell in battle that may be disturbing to some.
This talk is presented as part of Pejepscot Historical Society’s yearlong commemoration of the Civil War sesquicentennial.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
