BRUNSWICK — Caroline Carrigan, a senior at Mt. Ararat High School; and Hannah Duffek, a senior from Brunswick High School, are the 2013 recipients of educational grants from Brunswick Masonic Lodge.
The lodge awards $1,000 annually to students who best embody the Masonic principles of hard work and a positive contribution to their community.
Carrigan served on the Student Council for four years, was part of the Student Senate and was involved in the Peers Assisting and Leading Students program. She also volunteered in Portland helping raise awareness of toxic chemicals in the food supply, and also with the Friends of Cobbossee Watershed teaching children about water quality and the ecology of the watershed.
Duffek volunteers in elementary schools and as a tennis instructor, is a four-year participant American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, and organized and volunteered to match high school mentors with younger students to assist with homework.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
