BRUNSWICK

Last season, Dean Hall’s Lisbon High School boys track team accomplished a first, capturing the State Class C title at Dover/Foxcroft. It had been a long process for the Greyhounds, who had come all so close on several occasions of winning that elusive championship.

This season, Lisbon has picked up right where it left off in 2014. On Tuesday, the Greyhound boys earned their 10th consecutive Mountain Valley Conference title, finishing off the event on its brand new track after the opening of the meet at Cony High School in Augusta was washed away after just 10 events five days earlier.

Hall sees his Greyhounds challenging for the title.

“We will be in contention, but everyone would need Orono not to show up,” said Hall, who feels Orono, who last won the Class C boys title in 1997, is the definitive favorite on Saturday at Yarmouth High School (10 a.m. start). “All of the events for us this year are key.”

The Greyhound girls, after having their nine-year reign as MVC champs ended by Monmouth by a mere half-point, will look to rebound behind their strong relay teams.

“Orono is the team to beat in the girls meet as well,” said Hall of the three-time defending Class C champs. “Our relays are strong.”

Class A

Brunswick coach Dave DeLois has a balanced squad that will compete on Saturday at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham in the State Class A Championships, beginning at 10 a.m.

“I believe the boys can finish in the top seven, and if everything falls into place, maybe the top five,” said DeLois. “We would have to do a lot to go higher. We are strong in the 400, 800, relays, as well as the long jump and triple jump. But, outside of that, we will have to get some points from other events.
