BRUNSWICK — More healthful options will soon be available in the café at Mid Coast Hospital, thanks to a new national initiative.
In collaboration with MaineHealth, Mid Coast Hospital has adopted the “Hospital Healthy Food Initiative,” sponsored by Partnership for a Healthier America. With more than 155 hospitals nationwide taking part, it is the most expansive effort to impact hospital food and nutrition to date, Mid Coast officials said.
Mid Coast and nine other Maine hospitals are part of the initiative. During the next three years, Mid Coast Hospital will focus on creating a healthier environment with increased availability of nutritious options, said President and CEO Lois Skillings said.
The initiative includes more access to fruits and vegetables, encouraging healthier beverage choices, preparing healthier foods and making healthy meals more affordable.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
