PORTLAND (AP) — The federal government is awarding $2.35 million for the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites in Maine.
The money is from the federal Environmental Protection Agency and is intended to help communities redevelop the contaminated sites. It is part of $54.3 million the EPA is using to clean up brownfield sites around the country. Brownfields are properties that have hazardous contaminants that make them difficult to redevelop for new uses.
The Maine grants are going to projects in Berwick, Lubec and Rockland. The Penobscot Indian Nation, Portland Harbor Commission and Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments are also getting grants.
