Dragon girls JV lax wins 3-of-4

BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick High School girls jayvee lacrosse team took home wins against Oxford Hills, Morse and Mt. Ararat in recent action, while falling in a close match against South Portland.

In the first game against the Vikings, Colleen McKearney led the way with three goals en route to a 7-4 victory. The Dragons also received one goal each from Emily Coffin, Holly Black, Bronte Fontaine and Ashley Alexander. Lauren Grocholl was a standout on the draw, while Tessa Alexander, Erin Bradstreet, Carol Headley and Lydia Ginty were noted for tight play on defense. Emily Anderson had a strong performance on the attack.

Against South Portland, the Dragons came up short in an 8-6 contest. Strong zone defense was utilized with midfielders Black, Grocholl and McKearney, while Lily Gardner, Alex Wagner and Elena Dugal put together a strong performance on the attack.

The third game featured a cross-town rivalry matchup against Morse, with the Dragons coming out on top, 11-5. Coffin notched four of Brunswick’s 11 goals, with Wagner and Ashley Alexander contributed with two goals apiece, while McKearney, Grocholl and Fontaine added one each.

Hannah Day, Kathleen Koval and Madeline Berry turned in strong offensive and defensive performances.

In another match with “bridge rival” Mt. Ararat, the Dragons captured the highly contested game, 3-2. McKearney took care of the scoring, tallying all three goals. Bradstreet, Grocholl, Black, Tessa Alexander, Coffin, Ashley Alexander, Headley and Ginty helped make the victory happen with strong zone defensive play.

Dragons goalie Alexis Belling was praised by coach Mike Halmo for her outstanding play. The rivalry continues with Mt. Ararat on Thursday when the Dragons play host.

Brunswick improved to 5-2-1 on the season.

Hawks edge Eagles in JV lacrosse

TOPSHAM — Andrew Waltz scored two unassisted goals for the Mt. Ararat High School jayvee boys lacrosse team in its recent game against Marshwood. However, it was the Hawks that captured the tight, 5-4 victory.

Dylan Schenck and Gage Palmer completed the scoring for the Eagles, with Zach Caouette getting credit for the assist on Palmer’s goal.

Christian Chappetta, Aaron Thurlow, Devon Hoskins, Steven Johnson and Jake Head were noted for strong play. Parker Lacy turned away five shots in net, while Leon Perrault also saw time in net, collecting two saves.

The Eagles fall to 4-5 on the year and will travel to Cony on Wednesday.

DSG cruises past to two wins

BRUNSWICK — Dick’s Sporting Goods ran away with a 13-6 victory over Hawkes and Taylor on Thursday in Brunswick Cal Ripken Majors baseball.

Kevin Connolly and Drew Desantis led the way for Dick’s with three hits. AJ Wolverton, Noah Goddard, Tanner Rapoza and Riley Hewson each contributed multiple hits, while Josh Poulin collected his first hit of the season. Kenny Hogan scored two runs.

For Hawkes and Taylor, Cody Larson started the game with a hard triple, while Coenradt Taylor added two hits and an RBI. Thomas Seitz and Treyvon McKenzie contributed with a double each. Matt Duhaine, Isaac Albaugh and Spencer Marquis all shared time on the mound.

Caputi, Middlebury advance

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team has advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the 15th time in program history with a pair of victories during the NCAA Regional at Gettysburg’s Clark Field.

The Panthers earned an 18-10 win on Saturday over No. 13 Hamilton and then took a 10-8 contest a day later over No. 12 York. The sixth-ranked Panthers (16-3) will take on Cortland State in an NCAA semifinal game on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Philadelphia.

Mary O’Connell led the Panthers with four goals against Hamilton, while teammates Bridgeth Instrum and Katie Ritter contributed three goals each, with Ritter adding three assists.

In the second game against York, Instrum totaled a game-high four goals, while adding an assist. Brunswick native Maggie Caputi collected a game-high five ground balls, while goalie Katie Mandigo finished with a career-best nine saves.

Mt. Ararat JV baseball tops Tigers

GARDINER — The Mt. Ararat High School jayvee baseball team captured a 5-3 victory over Gardiner in recent action. Blair Kopp led the way on the hill, going the distance while striking out five and walking only one. He gave up just three hits and no earned runs.

Adam Sirois led all hitters, going 2-for-3, while Eddie Van Note, Elliot Bowie and Jake Laurence all contributed with an RBI.

The Eagles improve to 5-2-1 on the season.
