STUDENTS and teachers of Maine Region 10 Technical High School cut the ribbon on a new paint facility Wednesday made possible by a grant from Lowe’s home improvement stores.
Maine Region 10 Technical High School unveiled a new paint booth Wednesday, and students showed off one of its first products: a refurbished van they donated to a local charity.
The school recently received a 2013 Lowe’s Skills- USA grant to improve programs that participate in National SkillsUSA, a national student leadership organization of tech students, teachers, community members and businesses.
Region 10 Technical High School SkillsUSA students chose to request grant funding to convert the oil-based painting system in the Auto Collision Repair program to a more environmentally safe, water-based painting system.
Students then voted to “pay it forward” by repainting a damaged van with the new paint system, and donate it to the Coastal Humane Society for use transporting volunteers and animals.

Wednesday, students took officials on tours of the paint facility, showing the new equipment used to spray the water-based paint. Coastal Humane Society officials took possession of the jade green van while leading pets on leashes through an auto repair bay where the work took place.
Officials of Southern Maine Community College, Region 10 teachers, and a representative of U.S. Sen. Angus King also attended the ceremony.
