People of Woolwich, it’s time to tell Patten Free Library enough is enough.
Here we go again, Town Meeting time. Here we go again, PFL asking for another increase. It’s time to tell them no. Tell them we are tired of paying for their ice cream social and pizza party.
Ms. Kazimer says there are 1,101 people from Woolwich that used PFL over the past two years. I say: Prove it. In the past three years, I’ve talked to about 400 in town and I only found around 20 families and 10 of them signed my petition asking that PFL (funding request) be moved from the Town Meeting to the November ballot. Most people share a computer in their home and with the click of the mouse they don’t need a library.
I believe our selectboard likes the status quo of this year after year. They say because the town doesn’t have a charter, they can’t move the question on PFL from the warrant to the November ballot for a one-time vote. I don’t care if PFL is on the November ballot every year. My idea was to put it on the November ballot so more people could vote on it. But it can go to the June primary ballot. Really, all that does is give PFL a second bite of the apple.
Moreover, the town decided to put in their March newsletter that if PFL gets defunded this year, it would only be for one year. And, we the people would have to collect signatures again, or they would decide to put it on the warrant or not.
Isn’t that where we are right now? That is why I say the selectboard likes the status quo.
I say, if the PFL is defunded this year, then the PFL can collect signatures to get it back on the warrant. The truth is, we have a governor now that is trying top get rid of revenue sharing with towns. People might say he wont be able to do it. Well, four years ago, when he was elected, they said he would not be able to do what he has done. So, if he gets his way with revenue sharing, guess what? Our selectboard will be looking for ways to pay for their pie in the sky ideals.
Where are they going to look? In your pocketbook.
So, even though I collected these signatures, I ask you to come to the town meeting this year, stand with me and vote down PFL going to the June primary, then vote down the PFL request. We, or I, need your help.
Tell PFL and our selectboard enough is enough. After all, it’s your money, not PFL’s or the selectboard’s.
