BRUNSWICK — Behind stellar pitching performances from Henry Van Zant and Christian Martin, the Bowdoin College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Bates on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears took game one, 6-2, before earning a 10-1 win in the nightcap. Bowdoin improved 12-9 (4-2 NESCAC) with the wins, while Bates droppped to 8-8 (2-4 NESCAC).

Van Zant tossed a complete game in the opener, allowing no earned runs and striking out five, while permitting just four hits .

Bowdoin carried a 2-1 lead into the top of the fifth when an RBI ground out by Kevin Davis plated Griff Tewksbury to tie the score. Bowdoin replied in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single by Luke Regan to take the lead for good.

Bowdoin added two insurance runs in the sixth to seal the win.

Regan went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the opener to lead the Bowdoin offense. Ryan Sonberg went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Bates.

Bowdoin scored four times in the first three innings of Game Two to take an early advantage. After a first inning RBI groundout by Duncan Taylor, John Lefeber laced a two-run single in the second and Regan knocked home another RBI on a fielder’s choice in the third. That proved to be all Martin would need, as the southpaw allowed just four hits and struck out 10 over seven innings of work. Bates scored their lone run in the top of the fifth when Sonberg delivered a run-scoring single. But Bowdoin replied with a five-run sixth, highlighted by a tworun double by Tim McGarry, to put the contest out of reach.

Bowdoin will return to action Monday at home against St. Joseph’s. Bates will return to action next Saturday at Becker.

In the opener on Friday at Lewiston, Oliver Van Zant tossed eight innings of shutout ball to lead Bowdoin to a 7-5 win.

While Van Zant was scattering five hits and striking out eight for Bowdoin, the Polar Bear bats got to Bates starter Tom Baroni early. The Polar Bears loaded the bases with three straight one-out singles by Luke Regan, Sam Canales and Aaron Rosen. Baroni induced a groundball to first base from Harry Ridge, but an errant throw trying to force out Regan at home allowed the first run to cross the plate. John Lefeber drew an RBI walk to make it 2-0.

McGarry, Taylor and Rosen had two hits apiece among Bowdoin’s 11 total.

Outdoor track

Bowdoin returned to the East coast to continue its outdoor season with at a tri-meet against Middlebury and Springfield.

On the men’s side, Bowdoin trailed Middlebury 181-143.5, but topped host Springfield by 50 points. For the women, Middlebury ended the day with 143 and Springfield with 134, while Bowdoin collected 108 points.

Katherine Harmon led the way for the Bowdoin women by sweeping the weightthrowing events. She took first-place finishes in the shot put (31-09.25), discus (123-.50), and hammer throw (153- 06.50). Michele Kaufman collected a pair of first places finishes in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.44) and the long jump (17-07). In the 400 hurdles, Emily Clark had a firstplace finish with a time of 1:07.11. Bowdoin’s entry in the 4 x 400, which included Morgan Browning, Addison Carvajal, Liz Znamierowski and Clark, posted a winning time of 4:08.13. Caravajal also earned an individual victory in the high jump (4-11). Brenna Fischer’s time of 19:30.81 in the 5,000 meter was also good for first place. In pole vault, Stevie Lane’s mark of 9-00.25 was untouchable.

On the men’s side, six individuals secured first place finishes. In the 200 and 800, Jarred Kennedy-Loving (22.82) and Taylor Love (1:58.75) each collected top spots, respectively.

Avery Wentworth completed the 5,000 meter (15:44.04) to finish first.

Bowdoin throwers Thomas Rehnquist and Andrew Murowchick each took an event. Rehnquist’s discuss throw of 130-06 and Murowchick’s 170-06.50 javelin throw were accompanied by a first place long jump of 22-01.50 by Chris Genco.

The Polar Bears head to the UNH Invitational on April 13 for their next meet.

Women’s lacrosse

A pair of Bowdoin seniors made program history as the ninth-ranked Bears defeated Endicott 14-8 on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Carolyn Gorajek scored three goals and handed out an assist to become the program’s all-time leader in points while goaltender Tara Connolly netted her 40th career win to tie the school’s career wins mark.

Bowdoin improved to 7-2, while the Gulls dropped to 7-5 on the year.

Needing two points to break the school’s career points mark, Gorajek led the hosts with four and surpassed Adrienne Gratry (203), moving to 206 for her career. Connolly stopped six shots to tie Steph Collins-Finn with 40 career victories.

Gorajek added five ground balls and three caused turnovers for Bowdoin. Jordan Smith scored three goals as well for the Polar Bears while Mackenzie Schleicher and Taylor Wilson added two apiece. Holly Davis paced Endicott with two goals and two assists while Lauren Todd added two goals and an assist. Caitlin Pratt also tallied twice for the Gulls.

On Saturday, top-ranked Trinity College used a sevengoal run in the first half to take command on their way to a 13-5 win over Bowdoin.

The Bantams remain unbeaten at 8-0 (4-0 NESCAC).

Kaitlin Hildebrand scored four times for the Bantams while Shea Kusiak, Meagan Leonhard and Martha Griffin added two goals each. Bowdoin was led by two goals and two assists from Gorajek.

Bowdoin received a valiant effort in net from Connolly, who stopped 15 shots. Bowdoin committed 23 turnovers in the game and went 12-17 in clears.

Defensively, Bowdoin was led by five caused turnovers from Erica Nangeroni as well as two caused turnovers and four ground balls from Clare McLaughlin. Trinity received three ground balls and three draw controls from Leonhard in the win.

Men’s lacrosse

Trinity’s Matt Cohen scored the game-winning goal with just four seconds remaining to give the Bantams a 10-9 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.

The goal spoiled a late rally by Bowdoin, which had scored four times in a span of 5:38 to tie the score at 9-9 with 1:08 to play. The Polar Bears (6-3, 3-3 NESCAC) see their six-game win streak come to an end and lose for the first time since March 16. Trinity (3-7, 1-4 NESCAC) earned their first league win of the season.

Franklin Reis had three goals and two assists to pace the Bowdoin attack. Billy Bergner and Peter Reuter added two goals each for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin senior Christopher Williamson made 18 saves for the Polar Bears.
