FREEPORT

Two men face charges of drunkenness and drug use after they were arrested in separate incidents this weekend.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, police arrested James Lynch, 41, of Alexandria, Va., and charged him with disorderly conduct, refusing to submit to arrest and drinking in public.

The incident stemmed from a complaint of a ruckus at Hilton Garden Inn on Park Street. Freeport police Officers Jerod Verrill and Jason Bartlett responded and subdued Lynch, who was taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland to await arraignment. He posted bail the next day.

The night before, a local man was charged with possession of marijuana and possession and sale of drug paraphernalia on South Freeport Road.

Verrill and Officer Robert Moorhouse arrested Jordan C. Babineau, 28, of Freeport, shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, when a routine traffic stop revealed Babineau’s registration was suspended, police said.

During the stop, officers smelled marijuana smoke emanating from the car. Babineau gave his consent to search the vehicle and the officers found three glass pipes with drug residue in them, as well as 13 grams of marijuana — “a little less than a half-ounce,” according to Police Chief Gerald Schofield.

Both men are to appear in West Bath District Court on Jan. 22.
