TOPSHAM — Nate Santeramo broke a scoreless tie late in the first half as the top-seeded Mt. Ararat High School boys soccer team defeated No. 8 Waterville 2-0 in an Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinal Wednesday night.
The victory sends the 13-1-1 Eagles up against a familiar foe as “Battle of the Bridge” rival and fourth-seeded Brunswick visits on Saturday at 5 p.m. Mt. Ararat defeated the Dragons 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 9. The teams played to a 0-0 deadlock on Sept. 7.
Against Waterville (8-5-3), Santeramo’s goal, assisted by Alex Lapierre, came with 1:44 remaining in the first half.
Mt. Ararat doubled its lead with 21:51 remaining on a goal by Will Hirnak.
“In the midfield, Waterville won a lot of 50-50 balls and chipped into the corner,” said Mt. Ararat coach Rick Renaud. “In the second half, we controlled play up until Will’s goal. We played average, but good enough to win.”
Eagles netminder Gabe Pelletier had two stops for the shutout, while Purple Panthers keeper Zach Disch had nine saves. Mt. Ararat held a 15-3 shots advantage and 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
