BRUNSWICK

Brunswick is celebrating Longfellow Days throughout the month of February. The following is a list of events celebrating one of Maine’s most noted poets.

Feb. 5

Poetry reading, 1 p.m., in the Fireplace Room at Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick. Featuring Maine poets Mohamed Omar, Daniel Plunkett, Zosia Szatkowski and Jeffrey Thomson. Refreshments. Free.

Feb. 9

Community poetry reading, 10 a.m., Merrymeeting Room, Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way (off Baribeau Drive), Brunswick. An informal gathering, facilitated by poets Ted and Ruth Bookey, and open to everyone. Come listen or share a poem. Refreshments. Free.

Feb. 11

Film, 1-3 p.m. Smith Auditorium, Sills Hall, Bowdoin College

A screening of John Ford’s 1939 film Young Mr. Lincoln with Henry Fonda, accompanied by a short subject featuring one of Longfellow’s best known works. Opening remarks by Tricia Welsch, Professor of Film Studies at Bowdoin.

Feb. 11

An afternoon at the Chamberlain Museum, 1-3 p.m. Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, 226 Maine Street. Tours on the half-hour of one of Longfellow’s residences in courtesy of the Pejepscot Historical Society. Behind the scenes glimpse of the apartment originally part of the Longfellow Rooms. Free.

Feb. 12

Poetry reading, 1 p.m., in the Fireplace Room at Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick. Featuring Maine poets: Valerie Egar, Jim McKenna and Kathleen Sullivan Refreshments. Free.

Feb. 15

Winter Wisdom lecture, 12:15 p.m., Morrell Meeting Room, Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick. “Looking at the 19th Century” with Bernard Fishman, Director of the Maine State Museum & collector and presenter of stereo views. 3-D glasses provided! Presented in partnership with Longfellow Days. Free.

Feb. 19

Poetry reading, 1 p.m., in the Fireplace Room at Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick. Featuring Maine poets: Julia Bouwsma, Suzanne Simmons, and Doug Woodsum. Refreshments. Free.

Community poetry reading, 10a.m., The Highlands, Georgetown Parlor, Maine Lodge, 30 Governors Way, Topsham.

Writers from The Highlands and beyond are invited to bring and share poems, with poets Ted and Ruth Bookey facilitating. Refreshments. Free.

Feb. 24

Open mic poetry and birthday celebration, 7 p.m., Unitarian Universalist Church, corner of Pleasant and Middle Streets. Community Poetry open mic readings to mark Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s 210th birthday, featuring Maine’s Poet Laureate Stuart Kestenbaum. Come read or listen and enjoy some cake. Free.
