Conference cross country championships were decided over the weekend with Mt. Ararat, Brunswick, Morse, Freeport, Merriconeag, Wiscasset and Lisbon in action.

One of the closest meets came in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference event at Cony High School where the Mt. Ararat girls edged rival Brunswick 57-61 for the Class A title.

The Eagles were led by Olivia Swan (fifth, 21:17) and Kelly Lynch (sixth, 21:19), while the Dragons were paced by freshman Tessa Cassidy (second, 20:53), Teresa Murphy (seventh, 21:46) and freshman Tiffany Tanner (ninth, 22:16).

 
 
“The girls had a very good day,” said Brunswick coach Dave DeLois. “Tessa has been really progressing and running a lot better and Teresa is healthy, although she had a back thing on Saturday.

I thought we’d be in the top-three with a chance of winning.”

In the KVAC Class A boys, Lewiston won with 47 points with Mt. Ararat fourth (110) and Brunswick eighth (182).

Top runners for Mt. Ararat were Sam Wood (third, 17:27), and Nathan McKenzie (14th, 18:15), while the Dragons’ top threats were Jamie Ross (20th, 18:42) and freshman Jason Higginbotham (30th, 19:01).

 
 
In Class B girls, Camden Hills won with 31 points with Morse fifth (129) behind the running of Charlotte Recknagel (22nd, 23:25), Danica Moore (30th, 23:53) and Lucy Rawson (33rd, 24:17).

In Class B boys, Maranacook won with 57 points with Morse fourth (139), led by Nate Stover (22nd, 19:33) and freshman Christopher Walfield (19:48).

WMCs at St. Joseph’s

The Western Maine Conference meet was held at St. Joseph’s College Friday with the Falmouth boys and girls winning the overall title.

The Falmouth girls picked up 79 points to beat out Greely (82) and Freeport (89) with Merriconeag of Freeport in eighth (186).

Top runners for Freeport were Nina Davenport (eighth, 21:27), Bethany Knighton (14th, 21:53) and Hayley Steckler (17th, 22:04), while Merriconeag’s Samantha Pierce finished 13th (21:51) and teammate Tegan Wu 21st (22:17).

In the WMC boys meet, Falmouth beat out Cape Elizabeth 64-92 with Freeport fifth (116) and Merriconeag eighth (219).

In the Freeport effort, Abrin Berkemeyer was 13th overall (17:55) and Mark Donahue 16th (18:03), while Merriconeag’s Jack Pierce finished second to Fryeburg’s Silas Eastman (16:10- 16:22) with teammate Zach Neveu 18th (18:09).

The Mountain Valley Conference meet was held at the University of Maine-Augusta on Friday.

The Hall-Dale boys beat out Boothbay Region 62-81 with Lisbon fifth (102), led by Nicholas Harriman (eighth, 18:14), Ben Kates (20th, 19:20) and Cole Brauneis (21st, 19:26).

Wiscasset did not field enough runners for a team score in either meet. Heidi Pinkham finished 31st in 25:15.

The Dirigo girls edged Boothbay 66-70 with Lisbon fourth (91). Top runners for the Greyhounds included Bree Sautter in fifth (22:03) and Caitlyn Bundy (19th, 23:58).

Up next for Mid- coast region runners are the Eastern Maine Regional at Troy Howard Middle School next Saturday ( Class A boys at 11 a. m., Class A girls at 11:35 a.m., Class B boys at 12:10 p.m., Class B girls at 12:45 p.m., Class C boys at 1:20 p.m., Class C girls at 1:55 p.m.) and the Western Region meet at Twin Brook in Cumberland with Class A boys at 10 a. m., Class A girls at 10:35 a.m., Class B boys at 12:30 p.m., Class B girls at 1:05 p.m., Class C boys at 2:30 p.m. and Class C girls at 3:05 p.m.
