HARPSWELL — Leo C. “Chick” Mercier, resident of Harpswell Neck Road in Harpswell died Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at the age of 99 with his family at his side while at Mid Coast Senior Health Center in Brunswick.

He was born June 10, 1913 in Lowell, MA. a son of Edmond and Jeannette (Ducharme) Mercier. He attended school in Attleboro, MA, then moved to Maine with his parents at a young age.

Chick worked for many years in the retail grocery business and later the automotive service industry. His ability to speak French endured him to the local Franco-American community when he managed the “Jenny” gas station on Maine Street in Brunswick for many years. He supported the war effort as a bridge crane operator at the Hyde Windlass in Bath for the duration of the war. He never hesitated to help someone in need or go the extra mile without question. He was a strong family man who put his family first and worked extra jobs to provide for them. He had served as a member of the Harpswell Neck Volunteer Fire & Ambulance and was part of the first group of trained ambulance attendants for the Rescue.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie; a son, Richard G. Mercier whom Chick was very proud of his status as a U.S. veteran that was interred in Arlington National Cemetery, a daughter Judith M. Gerber, a step daughter, Helen Hoverson, a brother Omer Mercier and a granddaughter, Michele Yanok.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Gladys (Stockford) Mercier of Harpswell; a son David S. and his wife, Elaine Mercier of Harpswell; a daughter Linda and her husband, Michael Yanok of Brunswick, and several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012 in Orr’s Island Cemetery, Orr’s Island, ME with Reverend Ray St. Pierre officiating. In lieu of sending flowers, memorial donations may be made in Chick’s memory to the Harpswell Santa Fund, c/o Roy Knight, P.O. Box, 126, Harpswell, ME 04079. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
