
He was born in Blue Hill on June 12, 1924, the son of Ernest E. and Lena Wardwell McIntyre. He grew up in Blue Hill where he was very involved with school activities. During his teenage years he worked at his father’s store McIntyre’s Market. In 1942, he graduated from George Stevens Academy. His college education was interrupted by WW II where he proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in New Guinea and the Pacific. He talked about this period of his life often. After returning from the war, he attended Bryant and Stratton College in Boston. Later he continued working at his father’s store.
On June 11, 1950, he married the love of his life, Jean E. Howard. The first years of their marriage were spent in Blue Hill where Wilbur was very active in the local community. He was a 50-year member of the East Blue Hill Grange and also the Odd Fellows.
Wilbur graduated from Husson College with a degree in accounting. In 1960, he joined the IRS and remained an IRS agent until his retirement 30 years later. His career brought the family to several places in Maine. Even after his retirement he enjoyed helping others with their taxes.
Wherever Wilbur lived he was closely involved in his children’s activities and his local church and made many close friends. In Bath he was an active member of the United Church of Christ Congregational serving as treasurer and as a deacon. His faith was strong and the church played an important part in his life.
He always enjoyed travelling, especially to visit friends and family in the U.S. and Europe. One of the highlights that he often talked about was the Winter Olympic Games in Norway in 1994. Grampa had a unique and close relationship with his devoted grandchildren and greatg randchildren. Wilbur also enjoyed history, reading and boating.
He is survived by his wife, Jean H. McIntyre of Bath, two daughters, Susan Besserudhagen and her husband Svein of Oslo, Norway and Martha Lewis and her husband Paul of Durham, five grandchildren: Christine Knisley and her husband Jay, Kari Besserudhagen and her husband Robert, Jessica Zamora and her husband Salvador, Lise Besserudhagen and her husband Anders, and Stephanie Medlen and her husband Aaron, 10 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Julia, Kristian, Nora, Isabel, Marissa, Julian, Lilly, Jackson and Lyla, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service or celebration of his life will be held in the summer.
