THE STRETCH of Route 196 from the on-ramps at U.S. 1 in the South and Lisbon Mills in the North is being repaved. The work started on Aug. 12 and was expected to be completed in early October. However, the recent cold nights have altered the paving schedule and timeline. Because paving under a temperature of 50 degrees is not advisable, the work has now been changed from taking place overnight to between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., frustrating many drivers as traffic is slowed to one lane. According to workers from Lane Construction Co., paving that is completed during cold weather is more permeable and makes water infiltration easier, which can cause rapid deterioration under traffic conditions. During offpeak hours drivers should be aware of uneven pavement, loose rocks and debris in the roadway. The work is now expected to run well into October. Lane is headquartered in Cheshire, Conn.
