PORTLAND — The Boston Red Sox have announced that Eastern League Manager of the year Billy McMillon will return to the Portland Sea Dogs for his second year at the helm. McMillon will be joined by hitting coach Dave Joppie, pitching coach Kevin Walker and athletic trainer Brandon Henry.
In his first season, McMillon led the Sea Dogs to a franchise-high 88 wins (previous record was 86 wins set in 1995), good enough for an 88-73 record in the Eastern League’s Northern Division allowing for their first playoff appearance since 2008.
The Sea Dogs fell to the Binghamton Mets in the Eastern League Semifinals, 3-2 in the best-of-five-series. McMillon is the second Sea Dogs manager in the club’s 21-year history to receive EL Manager of the Year honors, the last being Carlos Tosca in 1996.
The 2015 season will be McMillon’s sixth year as a minor league manager and his eighth coaching season in the Red Sox organization. The 43 year-old has a career managerial record of 387- 330.
