PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Portland Pirates (21-16-1-0) appeared to have gotten their groove back in a 5-2 American Hockey League victory over the Providence Bruins (17-16-4-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin Donuts Center, the first game of a four-game road trip.

Brendan Shinnimin kicked things off for Portland at 11:03, assisted by Joel Hanley and Jordan Szwarz. With time running out in the first period, Darian Dziurzynski added to the score at 18:49 with some help from Greg Miller and Tyler Gaudet.

The Pirates came into the second period on the power play, and Henrik Samuelsson opened things up with a 1:38 goal from Henrik Samuelsson and assisted by Alex Bolduc and Hanley.

The Bruins finally answered with a goal at 12:02 in the third period when Wayne Simpson got one past Portland netminder Louis Domingue (6-2-0) with a power-play goal, assisted by Justin Florek and Matt Lindblad.

They put up a second tally 55 seconds later at 12:58, when Colin Stuart scored, assisted by Seth Griffith. Three minutes later, Greg Miller made it 4-2 Pirates with a 15:58 goal, assisted by Eric Selleck and Francis Wathier.

Alex Bolduc locked the game up for the Pirates with an empty-netter from Szwarz and Selleck at 19:39.

Domingue got his first AHL start since November and had a great outing, saving 30 of 32 Bruin shots. The Bruins had Malcolm Subban (29 saves) in net.

The Pirates head to will now travel to St. John’s, Newfoundland, for three games against the IceCaps, beginning on Wednesday. The teams also play Friday and Saturday. All three games begin at 6 p.m.
