TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team followed up a season-opening loss to Lewiston with a convincing win at home against rival Brunswick recently, 40-20.
The Eagles (1-1) started fast with pressure defense to take an early 9-4 lead after the first period in a physical game. Brunswick bounced back in the second to go into the half down just two points, as the Eagles were in some early foul trouble but went into the half with a 15- 13 advantage. After the break the Eagles came back with the pressure and held Brunswick to just two points in the quarter to build a nine-point lead after three (24-15).
Jaden Lohr poured in 12 of her game-high 15 points in the final frame, as the Eagles quickly extended the lead to 22 points. The visiting Huskies were led by Riley Turgeron with 10 Points.
For the Eagles, Lauren Magno added 10 points while Hannah Kenney had seven and was a standout on defense.
Mt. Ararat will host Oxford Hills today.
