Ice-breaking operations continued Sunday on the Kennebec River. In images taken by photographer Ted Vaughan of Hallowell, four U.S. Coast Guard vessels — the 65-foot harbor tugs Bridle, Shackle and Tackle and the 140-foot Penobscot Bay, are shown ramming through ice near the Kennebec Bridge, which connects Richmond and Dresden. Authorities decided to conduct spring breakout maneuvers much earlier than normal to alleviate problematic ice jams.
