TOPSHAM

It’s a busy month for the Topsham Public Library.

In addition to an ongoing fundraiser, the library will be getting a bit of a facelift.

The library is currently taking part in the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bags program. For every $2.50 “good karma” bag sold at the Topsham Hannaford, the library will receive $1. The Hannaford Helps reusable bag program was developed as a way for Hannaford’s customers to contribute to their local community. The recipient of proceeds each month is chosen by store leadership.

Library Director Susan Preece said the program is part of an ongoing fundraising effort throughout the year. The library is responsible for fundraising 15 percent of its operating budget.

Preece cited the Hannaford program as a great way to get people in the community thinking about the library and the resources it provides.

“It might get people to think,” she said, “what is it that the Topsham Public Library needs?”

The Topsham library has previously been chosen for the program. Preece said it correlates with the library’s Business Roundtable program, which is a group of businesses in the community that annually sponsor the library. Topsham runs a number of programs for the community at the library.

“It’s a community center for all ages,” said Preece. “It’s a place for people to self educate, and find enrichment.

“It never really was just books,” she added. “Libraries are information centers more than anything else.”

The library has wide-ranging programs for all members of the community. Some of the programs include a preschool story time, creativity projects for teens, and an adult literacy program.

The library’s current building was built in 2004, and will be getting a facelift for the first time since then. Preece said painting is already underway in parts of the building.

The library will be closed from Tuesday, Jan. 30, to Saturday, Feb. 3, to paint the main section of the building. High ceilings in the main section prevent the library from opening during that time.
